Trucker Driving School Enrollment Rises Amid Trucker Shortage

DUNCAN, SC (WSPA) – With truckers leaving the industry and the economy expanding, it has created a shortage of drivers across the country.

7NEWS spoke with a local trucking school about enrollment trends and what’s going on to get your commercial driver’s license.

When you see trucks on the road you know the things you need are moving, but before you see them there they have to take courses to navigate the cones and time spent in class.

Recent reports have shown that the trucking industry may need over one million drivers over the next 10 years. It creates opportunities for people like Latasha Pearson. She has just passed her commercial driving test to receive her CDL license.

“I passed; I got my CDL today. I was lucky to find this school. I went to another school and was not so lucky there, but when I Came here, it’s like family. They taught me everything I needed to know about truck driving. Truck driver said Latasha Pearson.

In addition to walk-in visits, job seekers are referred to the Commercial Drivers Academy by SC Works. The owner said their registration has increased by almost 500% this year alone. Finding a reputable truck driving school is essential.

“One of the signs I would recommend is to check the reviews of the school, maybe companies that work with the school, call them and see what their experience was with their past students. commercial driving school owner, Vitaliy Avramenko said.

Industry officials have said driving schools should teach the basics. students must learn all aspects of the truck, its engine, moving parts and how to maneuver on the open road.

After obtaining and receiving a commercial driver’s license, the company you work for must continue this training and connect the new driver with a mentor.

Ji’quan Stover is about to take his truck driving test and said that even though he walked in the door with an idea of what to expect, he still has to work hard.

“I actually come from a trucking family, so I kind of had a scoop on that. But like they always tell me, that first week of school is going to be a little tough. But you just have to t ‘hold on to it and when I came here the first week it was really hard they threw you in there they told us they got their hands on it once it stuck and the wheels started shooting, I was ready to go.. trucker, said Ji’quan Stover.

Much of the $23 trillion national economy depends on 18-wheelers. Some companies that are looking for truckers even offer tuition reimbursement for new drivers. The salary has increased over the years, along with more benefits.

“I have some of the instructors that work here who are kind of old school, they started as low as 22 cents a mile, right now the trucking companies start at 55 cents a mile.” Avramenko said.

“If there wasn’t a trucker, you wouldn’t be able to get supplies, no nothing so they are needed and there is a shortage of them. You need the training, just make sure you get the right training, come to the right school, in order to be safe. Pearson said.

Recent reports have shown that more than 80,000 truck drivers are needed to help solve the supply chain shortage.
