Braunstein’s Bill to Streamline School Enrollment for Military Families Moves Forward | archive, united states, politics

ALBANY – The New York State Assembly recently passed MP Edward C. Braunstein (D-Bayside) Bill A.6528-A, which allows military families moving to New State York to enroll their children in school at the same time as their peers, before physically arriving in the neighborhood. MP Braunstein’s district includes Fort Totten, located in Bay Terrace, Queens. This bill was passed by the Assembly on May 19, and the associated bill is tabled in the New York State Senate by Greek-American Senator James Skoufis.

The Defense Department estimates that the average child in a military family will move six to nine times during an academic career. More than 185,000 military children move between schools each year, potentially causing them to miss important enrollment, application or extracurricular enrollment periods within their new school community. If passed, the bill would make New York the twenty-fifth state to have adopted a policy for military children to ensure their uninterrupted education and timely graduation.
