Ask The Crone
The Impact of a Hysterectomy

Here is July's question from Kimberly:

I've read much about the Old Ways ~ what are your views on a woman's uterus being her "inner cauldron"?  I see much that makes sense in the lore of it, the womb being the source of life, and nature taking its course as one becomes the crone...but what of situations where there is a dire medical need for a Wiccan, a Witch, to have surgery to remove her uterus?  Some claim it will diminish her powers, and some that were she a "good enough, strong enough" Witch, she would be able to heal what causes the need for this surgery.  I am left without choice, to keep my life in the present incarnation - where I have two 2 year old boys to mother - so I am having the surgery. With much trepidation...and would be most grateful for any light you can cast on this issue. Thank you...
Blessed Be ~ Kim

Hi Kimberly

There is a lot of misunderstanding about the womb and its connection to a woman’s stages of life.  On the one hand, it is true that the uterus is the “womb gate” and as such is associated with material (physical) manifestation.  It also has its spiritual counterpart as a magical vessel. On the other hand, nature eventually transforms the uterus into something other than a fertile womb gate.  This does not mean that the woman loses her creative energy or potential on this plane or the spiritual plane.  Many men are powerful witches and magicians despite the fact that they do not have a uterus.  This strongly suggests that there is no specific human organ that allows a person to be “powerful or magical”.

As far as healing yourself, please do not be hard on yourself in this regard.  Some health issues are karmic and we do not have the ability to change or alter the resulting situation in our lives.  Even without karmic forces at work, it is often difficult to heal one’s self when we are already ill.  It’s like expecting too much distant from a ½ a tank of gas.  I am sorry that someone has suggested that you are less than because of your inability to heal or overcome your present situation.  That is pure nonsense and should be discouraged.  If that person understood the true meaning of empowerment, he/she would never plant such a negative seed in your thoughts especially during this difficult time.

I personally had hysterectomy in 1993 when I was 40 years old and never gave a thought to any of my “powers” or effectiveness as a witch being diminished.  The only part of me that was changed was the ability to create a physical baby.  But I went on and still am to giving birth to many more “magical children” and magical ideas and remain full of the creative potentiality that rules a witch’s life.

The “cauldron within” is a state of mind and a spirituality.  It is not about possessing a uterus and than losing it.  A writer can loses his hands but can still produce writings.  The organ (hands) is only one bodily tool but does not make or break him as a writer.  It is interesting that there are ancient tales about seeking the “lost cauldron”.  It requires a spiritual journey to retrieve what the cauldron once provided but the quest is about capturing the essence of what is within the cauldron rather than the metal object itself.  Perhaps for you now this is your new quest to retrieve the lost cauldron.

I wish you health in the days to come.

 Blessings from the Crossroads-The Crone
