A master’s degree that will provide focused training in emerging areas of biotechnology will be offered at Colorado State University starting this fall.
The Masters of Professional Science in Biofabrication and Biotechnology, hosted in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, will be the first Masters of Professional Science offered by the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering. Students enrolling in the two-year program will specialize in one of three areas: cell and tissue engineering; biofuels; or protein engineering, also known as synthetic biology.
The career-oriented technical degree program will fill the gaps in vocational and master’s-level training related to chemical engineering but not fully covered by an undergraduate degree, explained Matt Kipper, professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering and head from the program. .
“These students will have the opportunity to make an impact in a rapidly changing and growing industry around the world, but particularly in Colorado,” said Kipper.
The program will be accessible to students from a wide range of fields, including chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology and other engineering disciplines, Kipper said. Degree requirements will include business, bioscience, and engineering credits, as well as an internship at a government lab or biotechnology company. The program does not require the writing of a thesis.
Responding to changing areas
Offering such a degree is a response to growth in fields that interface with traditional but evolving chemical engineering. These include food, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, cell engineering, and microbiome engineering.
In Colorado alone, the bioscience industry, which includes more than 720 companies employing 30,000 people, experienced a 5.3% increase in direct employment between 2014 and 2016, according to the Colorado Bioscience Association.
The degree program will also provide students or practicing professionals with a lower barrier to entry into bioproduction and biotechnology careers. Potential participants include engineering and life science graduates who want additional training to prepare for careers in biotechnology.
The master’s degree in professional sciences will complement other graduate degrees in chemical engineering: the master’s degree in engineering reserved for courses; Master of Science in Chemical Engineering; and the doctorate in chemical engineering.
